The Only Baby Product I Feel Sentimental Over

My 16 mo ancient likes being in the Ergo and I like having him close by. The Ergo is engineered in such a way that you do not feel like you’re carrying 25lbs. It’s a fantastic product and simple to place on. I like the front zippered pocket. I can stuff so many things in it that I don’t need to carry a diaper bag.

I reckon with babywearing, the key is to start straight away. My son only wants to be in the Ergo, he doesn’t want to sit in a grocery cart or walk in a store. This can be excellent and kind of annoying, but at least I don’t have to chase around a toddler while I’m trying to shop.

I like how when he’s feeling shy he can bury his head into my chest and when he’s feeling playful, he can touch my face. He also likes to chew on the hood straps, which keeps him occupied.

You can discretely breastfeed in it, but I found that more distress than it was worth.

I am still hopeful this will work well for my growing baby, but so far neither he nor I like it. My baby is 3 months ancient and he seems uncomfortable straddling my tummy. It also puts a lot of strain on my lower back where the strap rests. For now I am using by Baby Bjorn, and will try the Ergo when baby is older.

    The Best Baby Carrier

My daughter and I like the Ergo Baby Carrier. We tried a sling and the moby wrap and both of those options are fine (and are more affordable), but the Ergo Baby Carrier is worth every cent. It’s comfortable on the carrier’s body, simple to place on, simple to adjust and is compact when not in use. Oh, and simple to toss into the washing machine and dryer! I always make sure we have our Ergo Baby Carrier with us wherever we go, because our daughter takes the best naps when she’s carried in it. :)

I also highly recommend purchasing the ERGObaby Sucking Pads becuase they will come in handy!

Ergo vs. Beco vs. Bjorn…clearly Ergo wins!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I owned both Bjorn carrier active and Ergo and tried on a Beco. When my baby was young (newborn to 6 mo), I used Bjorn. It worked fantastic and I loved how you can face baby forward…. until my baby got heavier, the straps started to hurt my shoulders. Maybe I have the Bjorn active, my back didn’t really hurt like other people said. So, I was looking for an alternative and found Ergo and Beco. Went to a local store to try both on. Ergo’s shoulder and waist paddings are much thicker (therefore much more comfortable), the hood is larger to accommodate larger baby and it’s always attached to the carrier for simple access. I use the hood all the time to provide shades under the sun and head support while my baby is napping. Also, Ergo has a front pocket that I don’t need to bring my purse along anymore. Beco has a removable infant insert inside with two plastic buckles attached. Once the insert is removed, there are still these two plastic buckles inside the carrier. I can’t imagine how comfy those can be for baby sitting inside. I certainly like my Ergo.

My son and I both like this! He doesn’t like to ride in a stroller so I would end up holding him on my hip and pushing the stroller with my free hand. The Ergo carrier has saved my aching arms!

Bought the ergo baby because I didn’t like the mobey and other types of carriers. My boss recommended ergo baby. When I bought it, I loved it! Simple to use. But, I realized that my baby girl likes to look around…I wish it had a front facing feature. I tried the hip place position…it was a bit confusing…but I’m sure after time, I’ll get the hang of it. I LIKE the pokets and the hood. I use it when I got to the market real quick or as a back up to the stroller when she wants to get out.

Versatile carrier for older infants and toddlers
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this carrier for my second child when he was about nine months ancient. I am under 5 feet tall and found the Bjorn painful to wear and very inconvenient since a large part of the reason I needed a carrier was to be able to care for both of my children. When my children were younger infants, I used a sling.

I bought the Ergo and immediately started using it for carrying my son on my back. It didn’t take long to learn how to use it this way and he quickly caught on as well. He didn’t always cooperate as he got older, but by that time I was able to get him on my back even under protest. The first few times we used it, my son didn’t like it very much, but he got used to it and was pleased in the Ergo until he got ancient enough to reckon it was too baby’ish when he was about 3. It worked very well for naps and walks, and was a lifesaver for errands when I could place his older sister in the cart and my son on my back. My children are 18 months apart in age and having the Ergo made my life a small bit simpler.

I used this as a front carrier mainly when taking my son out of the carseat when he was asleep. I found that if I loosened the sternum strap and pulled it up high I could fasten it and then make adjustments with a small less distress.

I didn’t find that the carrier’s bulk was a huge issue, even though I live in a warm climate. My son’s pant legs rode up in the winter and I had to make an effort to tug them down or place a pair of “baby legs” on him. It also takes a small care to make sure the carrier doesn’t cause a jacket or coat to ride up, but we could certainly use it with winter clothing.

My husband used this carrier as well with no problems- 32-34 waist and 40 chest. I couldn’t see him using a Mai Tai, or Babyhawk carrier quite as willingly. We also had a full frame pack but very rarely used it as we felt this carrier was adequate for the light hiking that we’re doing with 2 young children.

My considerably larger brother (over 6′) uses an Ergo to carry his son everywhere and has used it both as a front and back carrier.

we got this in black with iris embroidery & like it. our daughter is now 13mos ancient, and we still use it when shopping, etc. recently, we had her on my back and went hiking, and also berry picking. and it worked out fantastic. my wife is 5-3, i’m 6-2, and it’s simple to adjust the straps for the difference.

Best Carrier…..my small one (16 months) is now 25lbs and I can carry her on my back no worries whilst grocery shopping and more. The padding and support is fantastic. Also a life saver to keep her where I can see her, out of harms way so I can get on with it. Plus she likes the ride! =)

Don’t bother with the cheaper brands save up for this and use it from birth to…….2 years and beyond-certainly worth it.

I started out with the Moby when my son was an infant, and it was fantastic. We got the Bjorn when his neck was strong enough, and we went back and forth happily between the two. THEN he got older and heavier! After 5 minutes in either, by back started killing me, so I stopped wearing him altogether. Then over the course of a week, I heard about the Ergo from 3 different people and I bought one without even trying it…

I LIKE IT!!! I only wish I knew about it sooner so I could have been wearing him this whole time! ALL the pressure is place on your hips, not shoulders and back (the weight is distributed so well that nothing hurts!). I wear mine really low on the hips so it is even more comfortable. This is the only carrier you’ll ever need!

I really fell in like with this baby carrier as soon as it arrived! I had bought a Baby Bjorn carrier previously. It was very uncomfortable and just didn’t seem to fit right. The Ergo Baby carrier is so comfortable and so versatile. I like the multiple carrying positions (front, side/hip, and back). I place my 2 year ancient in it just to see how comfortable it was with extra weight. It was FANTASTIC! The thick padded straps didn’t dig into my shoulders at all. If you are looking for a baby carrier…this is the one to get! You will NOT regret it!

  12. First Time Mom says:

    Fantastic product
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
    Pros:

    1. Unlike Baby Bjorn, the Ergo carrier is simple on my back – a lifesaver when I need to carry my son in order to soothe him.

    2. It is sturdy and well made too.

    3. The zip pocket is fantastic for essentials when I’m out and about.

    4. I like how the excess straps can be rolled up and I like the elastic bands safety feature around the buckles.

    5. I like how I can add a backpack to the carrier, which I’m now seriously considering in light of upcoming travel.

    Cons:

    1. I’m finding it very hard to carry him on my back but I guess I just need more practice.

    2. Like another reviewer said, this carrier can get quite hot but I don’t need the extended shoulder/waist straps of Ergo Sport.

    3. My son doesn’t care much for this carrier and will struggle (he will literally try to twist himself off the carrier – thank goodness that it is secure!) when I place him in or if I stay stationary in one place for too long. I’m not sure whether it’s because he wants to crawl about or whether he’s too hot.

    4. My son despises the hip carry position in the carrier.

I bought this carrier specifically for our vacation. We were taking our toddler on airplane for the first time and knew that we would not have enough hands to navigate the airport check-in and security while chasing a toddler. This carrier was comfortable and support my son’s 26 pounds quite easily.

I like this baby carrier. I used a moby wrap for a long time- 9 months and it was excellent when my baby was smaller but killed my back once he got heavier, So when I tried the ergo I was impressed and amazed because I can carry him and his weight is so nicely distributed, it’s like carrying a way smaller baby/ Incredible. I like it. If I were to only have one carrier for all parts of baby’s growth, this would be it. Plus, my husband can use it too and it looks excellent on both of us! Yay!

We got this immediately after my son was born. Its been 3.5 years and we absolutely like it. My son feels very comfortable in it. He would sleep comfortably when we go for a hike. Just couple of days back when we were in Sequoia National Park we used this and my son comfortably took his afternoon nap. I strongly recommend this baby carrier.

We’re still using this carrier for my 30 lb 1 year ancient. It is very comfortable, and we’ll easily be able to carry him up until the weight limit on our backs. I like that my husband and I can both use this carrier. My son won’t ride in a stroller for long periods of time, but he’s perfectly content in the Ergo. The back carry is a small intimidating initially, but it is much simpler once the child is ancient enough to hold on. The instructional videos are very excellent. You won’t be disappointed with this carrier!

    Best Carrier Ever!!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
First lets get a few things out of the way – yes the baby has to be facing you, and yes the carrier is expensive – but you have to look at all the research that has gone into it. Babies and toddlers are NOT supposed to hang by their crotch – how would you like to be carried around like that??

This carrier is ergonomically right for both mommy AND baby. It is very comfortable for me to carry around my 20+ lb 6mo and he likes being in it! I obviously have a huge baby but I did use the infant insert until he was about 14 lbs, and then I continued to tuck his legs underneath him because developmentally he wasn’t ready to straddle. As he continued to grow, I started only tucking one leg in, and by 5 months he was ready to straddle.

I am constantly on the go, and this carrier is so simple to work with. I leave the waist belt strapped on for a significant part of the day, and just let the carrier and straps hang down when the small one isn’t in it. I don’t have any problems getting the sternum together by myself, you just have to leave the shoulder straps a small loose ( 2-3 in), reach up behind your neck, find the buckle, and then tighten the shoulder straps.

I successfully nurse my baby with the carrier on – just pull the goods out of the top of my shirt and he helps to hold it in his mouth. Sometimes I slide the waist belt down a couple inches so I don’y have to stretch the udder too far, but no complaints here.

I wouldn’t trade this carrier for anything!

I wouldn’t recommend this carrier for a newborn, but for a toddler it is by far the best product out there. I bought the newborn insert, but I couldn’t ever get my son situated in it correctly. By the time he was six months he fit in it just fine.

My son is nearly two years ancient and I still take him in this carrier when going to crowded places like Farmers Markets or ball games. He likes sitting on my back and has even fallen asleep. Unlike other products I can carry my 2 year ancient for several hours in it and be very comfortable.

I would highly recommend this product to mothers of toddlers.

Finally – a carrier that works for me!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’m so pleased with this carrier. With my first baby I tried several different kinds, including a sling. None of them worked well; either my baby wasn’t comfortable or the carrier would become quite uncomfortable for me after a small while (hurting back and/or shoulders).

(Full disclosure: I have large babies. We started at 9lbs!)

I was hesitant about this carrier only because of the price. But once again, I’m reminded that quality is often worth the price.

Having the strap that fastens around the waist helps distribute the weight in a much more comfortable way than any previous carriers I tried. I was concerned that as a small woman (5’2″) it might not work as well for me, but that is happily not the case!

Also, it might seem at first glance that fastening the shoulder straps behind oneself would be awkward or hard. I was pleasantly surprised by how simple it was and how quickly I got used to it.

I tried using the infant insert with my 9-pounder baby, but he did not need it.

It has a decent sized pocket in the front that fits my iPhone and keys perfectly and is positioned high enough on the carrier that it’s simple to access when baby is in the carrier.

The fabric is so soft and it’s very comfortable to wear.

    I highly recommend this product!

I like this carrier, and I tell every mom that I see about it because it’s not really well advertised. We had a Baby Bjorn that I used until the baby was about 3-4 months ancient, but after that, it really kills your back. I tried this with my son who is 28 lbs just to test it out, and I felt like I could walk around with him in my back for hours! It has option of carrying the baby on your back or on your side. You can also have the baby in front, but they can only face inward. This is for babies 6 months ancient and up. They sell separate infant insert which I never bought. But honestly, this is the best carrier out there for an older babies and toddlers. You will feel soooo comfortable. I highly recommend it!

The Ergo was as stated and pictured but it’s not exactly what I was hoping for in a baby carrier. I didn’t realize the baby couldn’t face out. That’s a negative. And it’s a small harder for one person to place the baby into the carrier than the instructions say. But, my son does ride comfortably in it and he’s fallen asleep in it. It does take a lot of the pressure off of your back versus other carriers. Overall, it’s worth the buy.

I have had my ergo for a month now and just adore it. It is so comfortable to wear. I like having the pocket in front for diapers, cell phones, etc. I have a 2 month ancient and he fits in nice and snug. Per others suggestions, I didn’t get the insert and we have been just fine. I wrap him nice and tight in a blanket and he is asleep within 5 seconds. I also have a 2 year ancient who likes riding on the back. I am upset that I didn’t buy this when my first son was born. Worth every cent!

    Simple transitional fantastic baby carrier
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve been looking for a fantastic carrier for my newborn. This carrier is phenomenal. What’s really fantastic is it will grow as she grows. So many of the other carriers seem to be limited. It’s very comfortable and breathes. The “hood” that’s attached is perfect for blocking out the sun for my baby and snaps onto the shoulder straps so it doesn’t slip. The Ergo Carrier comes with simple to follow instructions for front, back, side carry instructions. The front pouch is also fantastic for a small burp cloth that’s simple to grab. This carrier makes it simple to carry my baby but also leave my hands free!

  25. Polka Dot says:

    Very excellent, but not perfect.
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The Ergo is a very excellent carrier and is very supportive on your back. I can wear this carrier much longer then I can the Baby Bjorn. A couple of caveats…the actual size of it (it’s larger then the Bjorn). Also, the fact that you can only carry your baby face first. Yes, I know that is the point of it, but my baby wants to see what is going on in the world and always moves her head to the side, which is slightly hard for her. Also, it would be fantastic if the carrier had somewhere in front where you could place your hands. Other then that, it’s a excellent carrier and I feel like it’s very well made and therefore worth the price.

  26. Izzy says:

A fantastic carrier with some limitations
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We’ve been very pleased overall with our ergo. Our son (currently 13 months, 24 lbs & 31 inches tall) is comfortable in it and likes being carried. When he’s fussy, he calms down instantly when I place him in the carrier, even if I’m just carrying him around the house.

    PROS:

The ergo does a excellent job of distributing his weight across my hips, so I never feel tired or sore after carrying him on my back, even for long walks over rough terrain. We’ve done some pretty extensive day hikes in it and we’ve both been comfortable. My son occasionally falls asleep in it, but not as frequently as other kids seem to (I reckon that’s just him, though. He’s not much of a napper.)

Unlike one of the previous reviewers, I’ve found it simple to adjust (and I am neither thin nor athletic), but it does take a certain amount of flexibility. It took some trial & error to be able to get him into the back & side carry positions without help, but after one or two tries, we got it down. (I would strongly recommend watching the demo videos on their web site for help loading the baby.) After carrying my son in his Moby Wrap for 6 months, putting on the ergo was a breeze.

I like having the option to place the baby in multiple positions (front, back, or side). My son has never minded that he can’t face out, even though he sometimes faced outwards in his Moby. It’s simple for him to check out the view by turning his head side-to-side even though his body is facing in, so he never complains about that.

    CONSIDERATIONS:

The recommended baby weight range for the ergo is 15-40lbs. The infant insert can be used for smaller babies, but my son despised being carried in it, so after a couple of tries, we place the ergo away until he was about 6 months ancient. (The Moby Wrap is a much better choice for carrying baby as a newborn.) The ergo is really not designed as a “baby” carrier. It doesn’t replace a bjorn or a moby. It’s more appropriate for the second stage of baby-wearing.

The ergo is certainly designed for a smallish person. I didn’t realize this until I watched the videos on their web site and all the demos are with tiny moms. I am 5’5″ and 200lbs (about a size 18), and the waistband is just barely long enough to fit around my hips properly. I had to place the ergo away for the winter, because it was impossible to wear with a winter coat (his or mine). I guess they assume that you won’t be taking long walks in the winter, but we like to go out all year round for hikes with the dog, so that was a disappointment.

My husband (at 6’4″ and 280lbs) cannot carry our son comfortably in any of the positions, because the straps don’t align right on his frame. And we had to order the waistband extension in order for him to be able to place the carrier on at all. So if you’re a huge-framed or heavy-set person, the ergo may not fit you comfortably. The only way to know for sure is to try one on. We couldn’t find one in person to try before buying, because none of our local stores carried the ergo, but now that it’s becoming more well-known, you might have more luck. I’m pleased with our choice, but it’s something to consider for other plus-sized folks.

NOTE: This is re: a 3-year ancient carrier. The new generation may have improved things, but do try it on to check these issues!

This was given to me, and all my friends like it. I just do not know what people see in this carrier.

    The pros:

Yep, it is comfortable (in 2 of 3 positions).

    The cons:

I have a pretty excellent reverse namaste, but in any position except as a backpack, the straps are absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to reach or adjust.

The carrier effectively requires two people to get it on. In the side position, you need someone to adjust the over shoulder strap. In the back position, until the kid is 2, you need someone to help you get kid in if you don’t want to risk a brain injury (I’m athletic, thin, and flexible, I’ll add. If you aren’t any of those things, don’t even reckon about this carrier). In the front position, there is NO way you can reach and adjust the sternum strap (necessary to keep shoulder straps from falling off) by yourself.

The sternum straps constantly fall off the shoulder straps when you are changing them around. No amount of tightening will keep them on the shoulder straps.

There is a gap when baby is done facing in on front but is too small to go to back. During that time, shoulder side carry works, but a) is incredibly painful on your shoulder and b) the strap runs right in front of baby’s face.

My kids DESPISED the sleeping head rest (but, I admit, are comfortable in the carrier, but only in backpack position.)

The bjorn is brilliantly designed for simple use but is very uncomfortable (I have huge babies).

There must be something out there is that is intelligently designed AND comfortable. This is quasi-comfortable, but the numerous design flaws make it untenable as a carrier. It becomes a fantastic carrier for travel once kids hit about 2 – it works very well as a *TODDLER* carrier. But as a *BABY* carrier, save your money.

This carrier is so awesome i run out of words for it. Very well made, fantastic quality, ergonomic (I have scoliosis and it doesn’t hurt my back at all) and my toddler (3 years) likes it as well as our small 4 month ancient. They both like it so much we are thinking of getting a second one. This is well worth the money, you won’t regret it.

    It’s a baby carrier.
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
My husband’s words as he watched me place it on were, “I’ll bet papooses weren’t that hard to place on!” And then he helped me strap on the back buckle because my son was head-butting me as I was leaning backwards to keep him from falling out before I could adjust the shoulder straps and the back buckle. There was a certain learning curve for putting it on, especially with an infant who does not yet have excellent head control.

I haven’t tried any other infant carriers, because I agree that it’s better to have an infant sitting in it rather than being suspended by one’s crotch, as other carriers (such as the Infantino front-to-back) seem to. That’s the lovely thing about the Ergo carrier — baby’s legs are splayed in much the same position as a Pavlik harness for congenital hip dysplasia. This position is excellent for still-developing hip sockets. I was surprised, though, at just how far apart my four-month-ancient’s legs have to be splayed to get into the carrier base (which is wider than I thought from looking at pictures online). It’s wide enough that each time I place him in it, his pants legs ride up. I agree with a previous reviewer (S. Lee, Sept. 24, 2009) that it is not as simple to carry an infant that cannot yet wrap his/her legs around you, and thus the need for the infant insert prior to this age. I did not buy the infant insert; I waited to buy until my kid was 4 months ancient, and even then, his small legs barely peek out around the sides of the carrier (it’s that wide). He’s about 25 inches (63.5 cm) long right now, for reference purposes.

It’s also a lot smaller than I thought it would be. It arrived in a small box which was about the size of a 4″ 3-ring binder, and it is light! (Okay, compared to an infant carseat, it’s light.) I like that it distributes baby’s weight mostly onto my hips, which is such a relief, as he’s getting heavier quick, and my biceps can’t keep up with this work-out regimen.

It was my largest hope that I’d have the ability to do more house chores while carrying my four-month ancient. Problem: I can’t reach around baby in front to do any dishes. And I can’t place him on my back until he has better head support, per instructions for the carrier. The most I’ve been able to do with him is stroll around the backyard, staring at all the weeds I can’t hoe. He likes being carried though. He looks around and is amazed at the world outside. He gets to sample everything I eat, because it lands on him, too. And he’s gotten milk and saliva all over the straps in less than a week. He falls asleep in it as well, lulled by my movements.

I like the sleep cover. It’s designed nicely! It worked well as a sunshade as well, just to place over his head, and the elastic kept the wind from blowing it off. I do wish it were detachable, though, because it just doesn’t tuck into that pocket very well, and occludes my vision of where I am walking. But, I bought the non-sport carrier. (The sport carrier’s hood IS detachable.) Update 2010/04/27: I’ve learned that the elastic allows me to tuck it under his bum, and it stays out of view nicely.

The Ergo carrier user manual says it can carry a child up to 40 lbs. The box says, “Designed in USA” and “Made in China.”

I do wish, as I’ve seen the reviews before mine, that I’d gotten a chance to try the Beco carrier to compare (and not just because the woman who developed the Beco is a sailor). The Beco seems to carry baby in the same Pavlik harness position as the Ergo.
