This backup is wonderful. It fits me 5′ 10″ and it fits grandpa 6′ 5″. The stand makes getting the baby on and off simple. Baby could not be more comfortable riding in this.

    works well

    Pros:

    -pack is sturdy

    -not too heavy

-simple to get on and off alone since it has a movable kickstand

    Cons:

-it fits my husband well, but isn’t as comfortable for me (5’2”, slender build). it would be nice if the top strap was a bit lower so it doesn’t squish me up top.

-it throws my balance off a bit, but doesn’t seem to be a problem for my husband

-if your kid is on the chunky side you will have distress buckling them in. our 1.5 year ancient is slender, but with his coat on it is hard to buckle him in, the space is tight and you have to reach down pretty far to buckle. though, I will say, it being narrow is also a excellent thing when moving around in crowds

All and all, we are satisfied with the product and would recommend it to others.

We bought this product to go hiking until we found that it did not come with the rain cover accessory. When I wrote Chicco this is the response that I received:

    Dear Chicco Customer,

Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, we are out of stock of the rain covers for the Smart Support Backpack. We apologize that we are unable to help you at this time.

    Regards,

    Chicco USA Customer Service

Buy this item at your own risk, and certainly don’t buy it if you are expecting rain – apparently they are out of rain covers!

    Excellent Backpack, but…

When we first got this, I was really worried about the visor being so tall. Well, it’s tall, but it does fold down. You have to unclip it and push it back. Also, the front bumper does fold down. There are two buttons under the fabric. Then you pull the bumper forward (it isn’t simple the first time) and push it down. You may want a second person to help you. I found this out from contacting Chicco, because the information was not in the manual. This is vital if you need to store the backpack in the overhead area on an airplane. Also, the top clip cuts across my chest is a weird place. I am small, so that maybe the issue. I’m going to see if my tailor can go it up a small bit. This may seem like a lot of exceptions, but it is a excellent piece of equipment to have. It was a fantastic option to have on our vacation to Chicago and surrounding areas. Sometimes a stroller was excellent, but other times a backpack was the way to go.

Very Excellent, but has some limits

We had originally bought an Evenflo toddler backpack and it ripped apart. We use it at least a couple times a week. We can place the baby in it and mow the lawn, grocery shop, whatever. The Evenflo had a handle on the back to use to lift the baby up which was awesome and I wish this had one. We had to take the over the shoulder straps out of the pillow/cushion otherwise it would not fit around our baby–he’s 21mos and in the bottom 25% for size, so the pillow is a fantastic thought, but doesn’t work for a toddler. Also, the straps do not fit myself (5ft tall) or my husband (6’2″). On me, the waist strap sits around my thighs and on my husband, the chest trap would strangle him if he did it up. But, if you’re in between our sizes, it would probably fit fantastic. Overall we really like it and have chose NOT to send it back. Our baby likes to look over our shoulders and see everything around him. It is holding up well with use and we have now had it for at few months. I do recommend this because overall it is a fantastic value for the price. Just be aware of its limitations.

I really like this backpack. It is comfortable to carry and my grand-daughter LIKES to sit in it. Not only does my daughter use it when she goes hiking, but I have found that it also works really well on small excursions, like going to the zoo. It allows my grand-daughter to be up high enough to see everything while keeping her secure.

It is very simple to place your child into and, with the sunscreen extended, it helps to keep the sun out of the small ones eyes. Sturdily built, but with enough padding where it is needed. A really excellent buy for the money.

    Excellent value and comfort
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have been using this baby backpack for about 5 months now and am generally pleased. My son is now 19 months ancient and he seems to like it. It is comfortable and I like the built in sun shade. The only thing keeping it from a 5 star rating is the fact that the chest strap is not adjustable in its position on the shoulder straps and if I use it, it comes right up under my chin. It seems fine without using the chest strap though and the position may work for shorter people (I am 6’2″). The price of this product is about half of the competitors (I paid $89) but I have never tried the others so can’t say if they are worth it but I am pleased with this one so the others need to be a lot better to justify the extra cost. I mostly use it around town and for hiking. It is huge because of the frame, but folds up flat a small. I assume all the models with a frame are huge which might be a consideration if used for travel. I did use a Baby Bjorn once when my son was small enough to fit (which is very excellent for travel because no frame) and did not like it unless I wore it on my back (not the normal position). When I wore the Baby Bjorn on my stomach it casued my back to ache very quickly but I assume that was an issue with me personally.

    LIFESAVER
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We bought the Smart Support Backpack for our week vacation in Italy. Due to the cobble streets and roads that are not stroller friendly we had hoped this backpack would be the answer to travelling with a young child. My son, who is 13 mos and weighs 23 lbs loved being in the backpack. It gave him an opportunity to see the sites as we did and it allowed us to be hands free to look at maps, to eat, etc. My concern was naptime. But, my son did not have a problem falling asleep and taking his normal 2 hour nap. This allowed us to continue our long days of sightseeing and shopping. The backpack is very lightweight and does not add much more weight than that of your child. I was glad that I made the choice to buy this item.

  10. C. Broberg says:

Excellent for baby, terrible for back
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This backpack is lightweight, and my son likes sitting up high so he can see everything. He never complained about getting in the backpack like he usually does when we try to place him in the stroller. It is extremely uncomfortable for my husband and I when we wear it, but. Neither of us can wear it for longer than 20 min at a time, and I’m usually ready to take it off after 10. Our son is only 21 lbs, which is well-below the highest recommened weight for this product. We have tried to make every adjustment possible. If it was not already past the 30-day return mark, I would return it.

Pretty excellent- but hard on your back and shouldders
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
We bought this about two months now and my son likes riding in it and often falls asleep in it. But, it is not at all comfortable to lug on your back. I tried it onces and my shoulders and back hurt so much. My husband uses it all the time for my son, but after 45 minutes, his back and shoulders hurt too. We should have spent some extra money and bought a better one.

    chicco smart support backpack
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This backpack is sturdy, looks fantastic and our son likes it. It fits pretty well (we are both over 5’9, average build with long torsos.) Even our older pre-teen kids can use it to carry the baby in it. Some cons: 1)the sun roof doesn’t quite provide enough shade (just like the shades on the chicco car seats)and seems to block the baby’s view a bit even when closed up. Also, it tends to stay retracted unless you have on the rain shield to weigh it down and keep it over the baby’s head more; 2)it does get heavy quickly especially with an 18 lb. baby in it. We were used to an ancient Gerry frame backpack that was very light-weight but lacking any bells and whistles. Unfortunately, I couldn’t locate any packs similar to that one or I would have bought it instead of this Chicco pack. In summary, I’m not sure if this pack would be ultra comfy if used for a long hike. But it’s adequate for small jaunts, making dinner, etc- and it’s not such a huge commitment as the Kelty would be in terms of cost, size and ease.

I bought this for aholiday to Croatia with my 16month ancient daughter. Shes about 25lbs. It was a brilliant buy. She likes it and I was able to go for long walks around the cobbled streets and the city walls of Dubrovnik. She was delighted to get into it as it gives her a fantastic view of everything. I can place her into it and then collapse the frame and place it on my back all quite easily on my own so you dont need any help to use it. Also, it was quite comfortable. Plenty of padding and excellent lumbar support. The built in hood is also brilliant for both sun and rain. Only negative is the lack of storage on it. Its got one small bum-bag type pouch built in.

This carrier frees us to go hiking with our 22 pound child and it works really well. I’m a 61 year ancient grandma and I can easily carry my grandchild on my back with this. It also frees up my hands so I can carry a leash and walk my dogs while carrying my granddaughter on my back. She enjoys the scenery and we get our exercise.

    hard on my back
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
i had this product for about two weeks and i must say it was really helpful. but for me it hurt my back. the hard plastic cut into my lower back a bit and also i felt that the weight wasn’t on my shoulders enough, therefore making my back and shoulders sore.

my husband on the other hand didn’t complain a bit he liked it. he is a lot taller than me too. he’s 6’5″ and i’m 5’8″. i reckon that has to do with it a lot. if you are tall and/or have a long torso this back pack is gonna work for you.

all the features are fantastic. though there aren’t very many! the chest strap that some people said wasn’t long enough certainly is. and the stand certainly does open and close with out pushing a bottom. maybe their models were defective or something.

in the end the reason we returned it it because somehow when i was closing the stand it broke and it wouldn’t open or close all the way after that so it would have been very unsafe to leave my baby in it while it was standing up on a surface. that was a pretty huge deal for me so i chose to return it.

No comfort, and rear legs broken
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
First day out of the box, The instruction (what there is of them) said “just pull on the legs to stand it up, well they broke and one side locked in and the other side locked out. which made the stand up frame worthless.

Also, for a 20lbs 11 month baby, the back was very unconfortable on the shoulders, I thought maybe it was me, so I had the wife try it, and she despised it more.

    We took it back

    Best buy all year
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this pack online after researching many brands. The price ultimately sold me on this particular back pack and I am SO glad I went with this one! I was kinda expecting a pack that looked “cheaper” than the others because it was so much less. (The other one I was debating upon was $170) Also, the previous reviews made me nervous about how it would fit but they either had huge problems figuring out the straps or just never wore a back pack before because I had NO problem with this. I am over 6 feet tall and on the large size for a woman so I usually have issues with things fitting my body size. I have a long torso and this pack really fits me the way it is supposed to! I also have a chest larger than Pamela Anderson’s and I have no problem buckling the chest strap :o ) I don’t know why the other person had such a problem because I still have room to tighten it as it doesn’t even go over my chest but above it. So not only does it fit fantastic but it looks fabulous and really well made! Also, the stand is very simple to collapse and extend. There is no button to push; it simply pushes in or pulls out and is held by tension in the stand arm. My son is 9 months, 25 lbs and about 28 inches tall and he fits fantastic. The first day I had it I took it out on a 2 mile hike and had NO soreness or awkward feelings in my step. I am just so in like with this pack! AND the wind shield is FANTASTIC and not included on many models that are $100 more than this Chicco! The only thing that is lame is the bag on the back of the pack. It’s unsafe since anyone could unzip it if you are walking in a crowd and steal your stuff. Not to mention that you can’t reach it without taking the pack off but you DO have the option of wearing it as a fanny pack so that’s excellent AND you could use it to store the wind visor thingy when you don’t need it. It’s really a non-issue but I felt I should include just one con :o ) Buy this pack! You won’t regret it!!!

    So far So Excellent
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I just received this today, and from the moment it arrived I’ve been testing it all day with my 8mo ancient 23lb small boy. I’m 5’4″ and had no distress adjusting the shoulder straps to fit me perfectly. I’m also a busty busty gal, and the chest strap was no issue for me, I even have more room should I need it (though I doubt it). Baby boy likes it. I plot on using it this summer for camping trips with our family (4 kids) so having free hands is a must, and baby boy is too much of a porker to place in a front pack. I also plot to use it for small outings, like a quick trip to the post office or to and from the car for picnics (most places we go are not stroller friendly).

Cons that I have noticed already…..

There isn’t a whole lot of extra storage with this, just one small pouch (huge enough to fit maybe 3 diapers and a travel case of wipies) and a glasses case…. so with my shoulders occupied, finding places to stash stuff I might need may prove to be an fascinating task.

Baby boy sits eye level with my hair, and has yet to NOT pull it…. mommies with grabby babies may want to invest in a hat.

Otherwise, I’m pleased so far- then again, I’ve only had it a day.

This is a fantastic backpack. My 11month ancient just likes it, now shes up were people are talking. I take long hike/walks and I hardly even feel like I’m caring her. I looked at a couple backpack carrers but this one is fantastic. Works fantastic while shopping too. Next task….its off to Disneyland.

No problem with chest strap here
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Maybe the other people are larger than I am, but I’m a HUGE woman with a HUGE chest. Around 52 inches. It fit fine. Yes, I had to adjust it, but there’s still another inch or two on each side for even larger chested people. I had no problem deploying the stand, and I was by myself with the baby. Sure, I had to sit on the ground to get it (because there were no tables or anyting around) but it was fine. Now, I haven’t used it for extended periods of time yet, but I’m going on a week long hiking trip this coming week, so I’ll edit my reciew with an update then!

    Pros/Cons from a 5’5″ 130lb mom with a 2 year ancient
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
First, my now 27 mo ancient son has loved this pack since he was 7 mos ancient!

    Pros:

    (a) price,

    (b) lightweight,

    (c) sunshade/rainshield is generously sized without getting in the way … it makes a very effective barrier to winter winds and precipitation

    (d) stable when loading your kid,

    (e) minimal extra backpack storage, which I reckon is deadweight,

    (f) lots of webbing to clip accessories on or carry a jacket by pushing through a loop,

    (g) fits my 6’0″ 175lb husband very easily!

    Cons:

    (a) designed for a longer torso than I have (15.5″ back waist to neck) and there’s no way to get a snug back fit from shoulder pads to lumbar support,

    (b) there is only 1 chest strap position and I’d like it to be 2″ higher,

    (c) kick stand lock is located on the back leg, approximately 1″ below my right shoulder blade (makes it awkward to lock/unlock the kick stand by myself),

    (d) the mark on the pack says child weight limit is 33lbs while the item is described as going to 40lbs,

    (e) there’s no place for your kid to place his feet if he’s huge enough that his legs dangle.

How I use it: when I dont want a stroller – walking the dog, walking about town on errands in the snow (urban living), riding the bus or subway, wearing it on extended playground/zoo visits in case my son gets tired at the end.

  24. Yvonne M. Jones says:

    So glad I bought it!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’m a mother of a 21-month-ancient. I just got a puppy and was having a hard time managing the stroller AND the leash on our walks. This backpack is perfect. It fits me well and my daughter likes it. She questions to stay in it when we’re done! I was worried about that because she never liked any of the baby carriers I’ve tried before when she was younger. You do have to toughen up your shoulders (by taking shorter walks at first) before going on any long hikes, of course. I don’t know the chest problem on one of the other reviews, because the chest strap is adjustable, long, and sits just below the shoulders, avoiding the “busty” area very well. But, it does come out of the box at the shortest setting, so you have to loosen it to fit your frame. The question of being able to “close” the frame with the child in it doesn’t seem to be an issue on mine. The stand part folds up easily under the child once the child is on your back. You do need long enough arms to grab it behind you, though. It makes no difference to you or the child if you leave the frame in the open position during your walk, but if you’re in tight quarters, you’ll want to close it. I did make the mistake of trying to place Aeryn’s (my daughter’s) feet behind me in the frame at first, which made her knees rest uncomfortably on the frame. The legs are supposed to go naturally forward toward either side of your waist. (The picture on the box helped me figure that out.) It is for kids from 6 months up to 36 months, and comes with a clear rain shield that easily zips onto the retractable sun shield. The rain shield is also helpful in windy conditions- my daughter thinks it’s cool and leans over to fog it with her breath. It’s not simple to do with a six-month-ancient puppy jumping around on you, but I’ve even managed to get into the straps and stand up from the floor with Aeryn in the pack (I’m reasonably fit, and she’s just under 30 pounds). This thing is rugged, comfortable, excellent-looking, and has “be prepared” features like a cellphone holder and a matching fanny pack (that can be carried on the frame, if you’d rather).

I am considering getting one of these and only looked at another brand at the store recently. I just wanted to make a comment regarding Halo Golden’s comment that you cannot close the frame while the baby is on your back. This may be very well right but it seems like a non-issue. The reason I say this, is because from the other model I looked at in the store (similar to this model w/ a frame), it seems there is no reason you’d want to close the frame other than for storage. So I reckon most people would probably leave the frame open while they are wearing it. That’s how I would use it anyway… I’m not sure why that user needed to close the frame after she place it on… I haven’t bought mine yet but if any one else has one and can comment on this point it would be appreciated. Thanks. By the way, please disregard my star rating above. I wasn’t able to leave this comment without choosing a rating so I chose a 3 because it was in the middle. Really I have no experience with this product as mentioned above — I just wanted to clarify the previous reviewer’s comment.

I bought this backpack about a month ago and was unsure how much use I would get out of it. We use it all the time. My son nearly always falls asleep in it he is so comfortable. It doesn’t bother my back or shoulders at all. There is a pouch on the backpack but it isn’t too huge, not that it has caused us a problem.

My husband brought this backpack for me to carry our 11 month ancient daughter in because the Evenflo Cross Terrain Carrier is too heavy for me. Unlike the Evenflo Cross Terrain Carrier this Smart Support Backpack does not have any place to store diapers, wipes, bottles and the rainhood. Lack of storage space is the reason that it’s not worth the money. I believe I’ll keep looking for a backpack that is functional and lightweight.

I am a six foot tall women with large size ribs and medium chest and this backpack fits me very well. As I am large and this pack fits me, I would reckon this would ajust to a small person well. I especially like all the padding on the surface that meets your back. I hike hills up to two hours with my seven month ancient (19 lbs) in the pack without problems. The built in shade cover is fantastic as you dont have to place it on and off as needed. The pack is very comfortable for both of us. The interior of the pack also adjusts for the baby size and as mine grows taller, I can drop him lower in the pack. I looked at many other more expensive packs as I thought they would be better fitted out, but this pack has all the features I wanted for a lower price. I highly recommend this pack.

I was going to order this backpack but wanted to try it out first. I went to a local store with a friend and tried this thing out. The sternum strap would not even snap over my chest…I have an average build but have a chest….and it would’nt reach. My friend tried it also and had the same problem. I would suggest that if you are interested in this carrier you find one and try it on first or it could be a costly mistake.

We bought this carrier after owning an older one that has started to look quite hideous. I must say, this company thought of everything! There is a place for my cell phone right on the shoulder straps and the padding for the parent in the shoulder and back area is superb. I never thought I would use a canopy on this type of product but I have and it is a fantastic feature to keep your small one dry. Fantastic job Chicco
