Bjorn Air/Classic vs. Synergy/Active vs. Comfort vs. Ergo
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’m a bit compulsive so we own quite a few carriers. For the purposes of this review, I’ll skip slings, and stick to backpack style shoulder strap carriers. Specifically the Bjorn line and the Ergo.
Ergo: The most comfortable of the bunch! While it can get a small toasty for both you and baby on warm days, both wife and I felt that we could wear it just about forever. Unlike most backpack carriers, the Ergo has a waist belt on which most of the baby’s weight rests. Those of you who’ve used a hiking backpack know exactly how much this helps. For those who don’t, there’s a padded band that sits just above your hips. When worn correctly most of the baby’s weight is distributed across your hips greatly reducing the stress/load on your shoulders and back. Unfortunately for us, our small monkey recently chose that she must face out, and the Ergo only allows them to face in. So it’s been sitting in unused in the closet for several weeks.
Bjorn Air/Classic: Smallest, lightest and simplest to use. We have the “Air” model, and the special fabric really does work to keep you and your baby cool. It’s my preferred carrier for quick jaunts and hot days. But the wife and nanny will wear it only if they have to. It is by far the least comfortable carrier we own. The shoulder straps are unpadded and relatively thin so they really dig into your shoulders. I find it merely a bit annoying, but the wife says she can’t wear it for more than 5 or 10 minutes before it really starts to hurt.
Bjorn Synergy/Active: Basically the Air/Classic but with wider, padded shoulder straps and a lumbar support piece. While a small more comfortable than the Air/Classic, it is still a far weep from the comfort of the Ergo. While the lumbar support is okay, the fundamental problem remains: all the weight is still placed on the shoulders.
Bjorn Comfort: The newest Bjorn, and by far the most comfortable. It has very wide and nicely padded straps, and like the Ergo, the Comfort has a padded waist band! While it isn’t quite as comfortable as the Ergo, it comes close. I have used it for multi-hour walks with no back or shoulder discomfort. And unlike the Ergo, baby can face in or out.
A couple minor complaints. First it is quite bulky. Given the way its constructed, its really much bulkier than even the Ergo, so it’s not the simplest thing to stuff in a bag/under the stroller. Second is that as of yet you cannot buy additional bibs. One bib is included, but given how much we use the thing it’s nice to have a second (note the Bjorn bibs currently sold are NOT COMPATIBLE with the Comfort). Plus while it doesn’t seem as warm as the Ergo, you and baby will be plenty sweaty on hot days.
All these carriers seem very well made, and with the sole exception of the Air, I feel will last a long, long time (while so far so excellent, I have some reservations about the long run durability of the fabric shoulder straps of the Air). Currently we mostly use the Comfort, but I still bust out the Air on hot days or for small jaunts and all in all we are quite pleased with the carrier situation. But we still have hope that one day our small one will deign to face in so we can bust out the Ergo again.
—ERGO—
Pros: Most comfortable
Cons: Baby can only face in. A small warm on hot days.
—Bjorn Air/Classic—
Pros: Simplest to get baby into/out of. Air is fabulous for hot days. Smallest and lightest (fantastic for packing).
Cons: Least comfortable. Some concern about durability of Air fabric.
—Bjorn Synergy/Active—
Pros: More comfortable than Air/Classic
Cons: Still no waist strap!
—Bjorn Comfort—
Pros: Comfort (nearly as excellent as the Ergo)
Cons: A small warm on hot days. Can’t buy replacement/extra bibs. Bulkiest of all four carriers.
If your a mom, you wont be disappointed.

I researched baby carriers quite a bit before I bought the Baby Air. I like this because I’m pretty functional with my three month. We go on walks and I do a excellent amount inside our home. He likes it because he’s pretty comfortable and so am I and the best part is he’s close to my chest, so he can here my heartbeat. Which as a mother knows is a nice quality. It seems to cool him down to know he’s with me and me be able to rock him and do things around the house too. I live in Salt Lake City and it can get pretty warm here in the summer. It was vital for me to find something that will breathe on those hot summer days. Whats also a fantastic part about the carrier is that it supports his head and I never have to worry about him bobbing around. The flap does fold down so when it comes to that time you can turn him around to face forward. It also has a small mesh bag built into the bottom strap to fold and travel with. Simple adjustable and really light. Fantastic pick and I couldn’t be more pleased
must have

I would not have survived motherhood perfectly without the BabyBjorn Carrier Air. I have used it for both my children (a boy then a girl). It is simple to don and doff, baby is very comfortable and pleased in it, and I have both my hands free! My kids just despised being in a stroller.
Ok for when baby was small & light….
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I loved this when my daughter was small, but when she got around 13-14 pounds my back killed. Her small feet and legs would also turn purple after 15 minutes. Not excellent. Go with the Ergo carrier if you can afford it- baby can’t be front facing but you can wear baby on your hip or back so they can see forward. Ergo carrier distributes the weight much better and doesn’t cut off their circulation.
A excellent baby carrier

We really liked this baby carrier. Our daughter despised the sling carriers I tried. I bought 3 of the sling style carriers in different sizes hoping that one of them would be the perfect fit. But, my daughter would scream everytime I tried to place her inside one of them. We were thrilled when I finally agreed to give Baby Bjorn a try and our daughter did not weep or scream when we place her in it the 1st time. We used it when we went out shopping, eating or multitasking while at home. Wish we had bought this carrier instead of the slings before her birth. We’ve used it from the time our daughter was 4 months until she was about 11 months. She outgrew it and exceeded the weight limit.

A Must Have!

I like this carrier! Sturdy construction, light weight, simple to place together and use. This will certainly come in handy on airplanes, trains, shopping, or just walking around the house.
very satisfied
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I really like the carrier but it is a small complicated to get on and off.
Well made, kills my back and shoulders
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This Carrier is a excellent thought, well made, and simple to place on, but frankly i can’t wear it for more than 5 minutes with my 3 and a half month ancient. Also when she faces out (she’s looking around now and doen’t want to face in anymore and has fantastic head control) the material pinches her legs. I’d say if you don’t have back problems it’s fantastic. I will say the mesh material washes well.
The way it works is fantastic… face in the baby’s head is cradled for when they are newborn, and face out the flap folds down to brace the shoulders. I just can’t wear it. Grandma and Dad tried it too and they had the same problem. Back pain within 5 mins.
I also tried the PeanutShell carrier and forget it, being lopsided (over the shoulder) my back lost it straight away.
I’m going to try Moby next… we shall see!
BabyBjorn Air
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Carrier is comfortable, material breathes well, simple to adjust and baby likes it. Baby very secure. The bibs are a must as our son likes to place his mouth on the top tab.
like the bijorn
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was pretty pleased with this particular bijorn it defiently serves its purpose but i do have one complaint about it and its the same complaint most people have it hurts my back about 10 mins. after I place it on. so i do suggest getting the one with back support. otherwise I like it and so does my baby..
Horrible.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
My son currently wants nothing more than to be attached to my body for hours on end, and our navy Bjorn was getting covered in spit up and was just far too hot in the summer heat. I ordered the yellow thinking it was a nice summer shade and the mesh would be a small cooler for the baby and me. As it turns out, the yellow was bright (read: neon) and the mesh reminded me of gym shorts. Aside from the disapointing color and material, there is still no back support… it was returned and I bought another type of carrier.
Excellent product
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I looked into a Baby Bjorn because my daughter didn’t like the sling I had. With the sling she lasted about 10 seconds before crying. With this Baby
Bjorn, she last about 5-8 minutes. No exaggeration. It seems like a excellent product but I am unable to use it as I had desired. For the small time I have worn it, the design and material seemed comfortable.
reliable
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
this carrier is very reliable. i had this for my first born who’s now 2 1/2 and i’m now using this for my 2 month ancient baby. it’s so simple to use. i can even breast feed, i just hang a baby blanket to cover. it’s durable and high quality. still looks groundbreaking new. it’s been with us for years now. simple to wash too. i’m now using a baby ergo for my toddler when we go somewhere where we need to carry her. can’t do without baby bjorn!!!
Kills your shoulders & back…with ventilation!
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Over the course of three children we have had FIVE carriers: Two slings, a Baby Bjorn, a Snugli and the Ergo Baby.
The Bjorn is certainly the best looking and simplest to use. The clips and connectors are very intuitive and it’s simple to get smaller infants into it.
The “Air” version is identical to the “Original” but with much more breathable fabric. Unfortunately this doesn’t address the largest shortcoming of the carrier.
My huge complaint is that when the kids get larger (or if you wear it for more than ~10 minutes at a time) it really starts to kill your back. This is because the design keeps all the weight on your shoulders. It’s like wearing a backpack BACKWARDS!
The “Active” and “Synergy” versions have wider straps with a center buckle and a lower strap “lumbar” strap which provides additional support over the “Original” While this distributes the weight better, it doesn’t place it on your hips. Oh, and it also makes it a lot more fiddly to place on.
If you backpack, you know what I’m talking about. A lightweight pack is fine for lugging 10 lbs of books to class, but if you want to be able to hike for an hour with 25+ lbs you have to shift the weight to your hips.
If you only plot to use this when grocery shopping and reckon you’ll give it up when they’re 6 months ancient, this might be for you. If you reckon you might want to go to the park and hang out, or use it even when the kid starts to crawl, then the Ergo Baby is probably more your speed. My wife can take our 25 lb 1 year ancient for 20 minute walks around the neighborhood in the Ergo Baby Carrier.
p.s. this is coming from a guy who is 6′, 180# and fit. My wife is smaller and far more critical of the ergonomics of this carrier.

I absolutely like this baby carrier and so does the baby. I have a 2 year ancient and a newborn. The carrier keeps the baby cool and I can barely feel that he’s with me. I am very pleased I went with this product.
Fantastic Buy

Baby and I like the new Baby Bjorn carrier air. It is light comfortable and my 6 week ancient son likes it. I was excited to see the small pouch to store the carrier. It makes it simpler to fit into a diaper bag. Even my husband is proud to wear the carrier around the house and around the neighborhood.
A Parenting Must Have!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Super comfortable way to be able to carry around your small bundle of joy- and still have your hands free! A fantastic alternative to lugging around a stroller. I originally bought a sling… despised it and returned it. Then I bought a Evenflo Snuggli… super cheap and uncomfortable… and my 6 week ancient baby despised it too- returned it. Didn’t want to spend this much money on a carrier- but the reviews were fantastic… so I took the plunge. LIKE IT! Can’t live without it!
One guy to another
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As men we have to admit that wearing a baby carrier can be well, fascinating. Once we received this carrier it was imediately place into action. With an active 2.5 year ancient it is a must to keep two hands free as often as possible and this carrier works very well. My son, who was 2 months ancient at the time, fell asleep in the carrier within minutes and loved it. Because I am a very warm blooded person I wanted to get something that would not make me to hot…again this is the ticket. So far so excellent and I would recommend any guy(reluctant or not) or woman to try this out.
Doesn’t feel excellent on your back
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Overall, this is a nice carrier that we’ve used quite a bit with our now 3 month ancient. But, it does not have the extra back support that other models have, and I wasn’t aware of that when it was bought. My 3 month ancient is now 15 lbs and it’s hard to carry her for more than 15 min at which point your back aches. Also, I believe there are other carriers that are much less expensive that many parents like more than the Bjorn. I reckon the Bjorn is overrated.
The Best Carrier

Very simple to adjust and fit. Very light weight. Most importantly — the baby likes being carried in it!
Mr. Mom Bjorn
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
My husband LIKES to use this whenever he can, whether its just walking around the house or doing some shopping. I like that it adjusts to both him and I, and its simple to tighten and loosen up. My son is only 2 months ancient and likes to be hugged up next to mom or dad. The reason why I gave it only 4 stars is because where my son’s legs and arms touch the baby bjorn have to be covered otherwise they rub and get all red. It doesn’t seem to be painful at al for him though. Fantastic product, I’d buy another one again!
Favorite Registry Item!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I like this baby carrier. It has been a life-saver for us. We have been using it since our daughter was just over a week ancient, and still use it every single day, and she’s now 9 months. It gets very warm here in Texas, and this model breathes very well, so she doesn’t get too hot. It also fits us both comfortably – mommy and baby. And when daddy straps it on, it’s an simple adjustment to make it work for him as well. The design is fabulous – it works fantastic for baby facing in or out, and also adjusts as they get more and more control, and want to be able to look around more. We always take our daughter with us when we walk the dogs, and this frees up our hands. And she feels safe and close, and she likes walking around. She has squealed about this toy since the beginning. I would really recommend this to any new mom.
Like the lightweight material!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I loved my last Baby Bjorn, the sport one with the back support. Sadly, I lost it right after the birth of my 2nd son. I ordered a new one immediately. This time I tried the breathable mesh one and I like it! I do miss the back support, especially since I have a heavier baby (14# at 6 weeks) but this bjorn was more reasonably priced $75 compared to $130 for the one with light material and support. I do not go anywhere without my baby bjorn, and both my boys have loved it. The key is to start them early in it, to get them used to the positioning. Would recommend this product to anyone, dads and moms!
Fantastic Carrier
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Basically this thing is fantastic. I know people have their reservations over this style of carrier, but as a stay at home dad, I like it. My daughter has wanted to face out since she was two months ancient and you just cant do that with a lot of other carriers. I also like the light weight and breathability of the material. I get over heated simple and any one who has place a baby in one of these knows that they are a small heat machine. I will say that you need a excellent strong lower back for this carrier as there is only a simple criss-cross over the middle of your back and my wife says it really wears her out.
Overall, I have used many other carriers, including slings and this one is definately my favorite.
baby bjorn carrier

The BabyBjorn Baby Carrier is an brilliant product. This is our second Babybjorn and highly recommend it. It is an brilliant quality product. Our daughter likes to be carried and look around. The Baby bjorn saved my arms.
The Baby Bjorn Synergy is a better bet
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
We own the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier, and we all like it! But, it is too hot for summer heat, so we opted to buy this item–the Baby Bjorn Air Carrier. Without the lumbar support, all of the baby’s weight is on the shoulders, and my husband could feel a huge difference. We didn’t know Baby Bjorn had a new “Air” carrier, the Synergy, until we visited their website. It is made out of the same fabric as this one but is designed like the Active Carrier. So we are returning this one for the Synergy. Your lower back is well-worth the extra money! One less trip to the chiropractor or massage therapist will make up the difference!
Not for heavier babies
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
We received the Baby Bjorn Air Carrier from our friends. It was excellent for the first few months. But as other reviewers have written it is not so fantastic once your baby gets heavier. We had to get the Bjorn Active.
It comes with an attached baggie for you to stuff the Bjorn into. A nice thought, but the rolled up carrier is not much smaller. There is no way you can roll the Bjorn up and stuff it into the bag with one hand. We found it was simpler to just place it into the stroller basket or hang it from the stroller handles.
The material feels rough. And it feels flimsy compared to the other Bjorns.
Like my baby bjorn
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a very nice carrier. My 9 lb newborn fits fantastic. It is simple to get on and off. It washes well on gentle cycle. The only thing that could be better is that the material doesn’t seem very soft or comfy against the baby’s skin. I use a burp cloth to cover the areas were her face press against the material. It is worth the money though.
Like this carrier!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I absolutely like this carrier. I admit, I tried a cheap knock off soft carrier and it was so uncomfortable for both me and my baby. She cried in that one, but she likes the Bjorn. I also like the material on this one. It’s nice and cool for hot days in the Keys, which is pretty much year round! This carrier is fantastic on my back and it’s very simple to adjust. Highly recommend this carrier!
